General Information

IEEE ICC 2005 will be held in Seoul, Korea from 16 May to 20 May 2005 under the theme of ‘Towards the Era of Ubiquitous Networks.’
The technical program will consist of General Conference, eight major Symposia, and Tutorials.
The scope of ICC 2005 includes: Communications Quality and Reliability, Communications Software, Communications Switching & Routing, Communications Systems Integration & Modeling, Communication Theory, Computer Communications, Enterprise Networking, Gigabit Networking, Information Infrastructure, Interconnections in High-Speed Digital Systems, Internet, Multimedia Communications, Network Operations and Management, Optical Networking, Personal Communications, Radio Communications, Satellite and Space Communications, Signal Processing and Communications Electronics, Signal Processing for Storage, Tactical Communications, Transmission, Access and Optical Systems.
Prospective authors are invited to submit original technical papers for presentation at ICC 2005 and publication in the Conference Proceeding. Proposals for Tutorials are also invited.

3. Symposium Content
In the past few years, telecommunications technology has
achieved great improvements in mobile multimedia and
wireless transmission of data. Broadband access networks
are now widely deployed, but still the services used over
them are very limited. At the same time, the Internet has
expanded its domain and capacity and started to merge with
mobile networks. Third generation wireless systems such as
UMTS and cdma2000 are now being deployed to provide multi-
media and high-speed Internet services to mobile users.
Seamless Internet access across heterogeneous access
networks is an area of intense research.

An advanced core network is required to interconnect all those
networks in a seamless and transparent fashion. Managed
quality of service, secure VPNs, broadcast and multicast services
are only a few of the new services provided. New Internet style
application oriented signaling protocols like SIP are finding their
way into mobile and fixed networks to support creation of new
services, which are desperately needed to bring profitability to
an expensive infrastructure. In general the high cost of mobile
network deployment emphasizes the need to charge for traffic
and services, as well as for improved self-organization,
areas not yet well developed in the Internet.

The next generation network will be seen as a new initiative to
bring together all heterogeneous systems under the same framework,
where the service shortcoming of one system can be
complemented by other systems. Network convergence is
therefore regarded as the next major challenge in the evolution of
telecommunications technologies and the integration of computer
and communications.

In parallel, distributed software technologies are rapidly evolving
supporting ever more powerful communication services. New
software technologies combined with the emerging communications
and computing technologies provide endless opportunities for rich
and flexible new communications services. Researchers are now
developing innovative nomadic computing environments, which
will combine the flexibility of time along with the flexibility of location
offered by virtual enterprises (anywhere anytime).
However, all of these infrastructure components and architectures
require thorough security and privacy measures in order to ensure
correct function and availability as well as the absence of
unintended negative side-effects (fraud, confidentiality and
integrity breaches, erosion of location privacy etc.) of the global
service infrastructures.
